All stages of web design process are important, but some of the stages really important that they not will only affect your website structure, it will affect your internet marketing as well.

By looking at the infographic graphic below (by John Furness of Simple Square), research, wireframes, landing page artwork, coding, validation, cross platform and browser testing are the most important stages for a web developer. While for clients, there are two important stages which are wireframes and landing page artwork review. Landing page artwork is so important because this is the first page your users will land one and you have only 5 - 7 seconds to convince them to stay long and to do whatever you want them to do on your website.

How to choose the right hosting in Malaysia

Saturday, 30 July 2011 Category Hosting Issue 0 Comments
Choosing the right hosting in Malaysia is very important for your web stability. If you choose the wrong hosting, it will bring you a lot of problems, especially if your companies are web developing companies. Today, I am going to share with you how to choose the right hosting.

How to choose the right hosting in Malaysia

Let us start with a statistic from Webhosting.info. According to Webhosting.info, Exabytes (Exa Bytes Network Sdn Bhd) is leading in hosting industry, they more 21% of market share compared to other hosting companies. Exabytes host more than 20, 000 domain names until 2010. Since I used only Exabytes and Shinjiru (Shinjiru Technology Sdn Bhd), I would like to use these two companies as my example in choosing the right hosting company.

Prevention is always Better than Cure
I always believe that prevention is better than cure. What makes a hosting company a great company is....using prevention strategy. Exabytes uses prevention strategy but Shinjiru uses cure strategy. If you use Content Management System (CMS), e.g Joomla, Wordpress, etc., you will receive emails from Exabytes if there is any latest updates for your CMS to PREVENT hackers hack your websites. While Shinjiru only inform you after their hosting and your websites are hacked.

Stability
Hosting stability is another factor to choose the right hosting in Malaysia. I have been with Exabytes and Shinjiru for almost the same time frame. I have never experienced any issue with Exabytes but I had 4 – 5 server crashes and websites hacked in less than 6 months. I still remember Shinjiru had a server crash this year with NO BACKUP AT ALL!!! They had to send the whole server to oversea to check it. It took more than seven days to do the job. Because of the instability of Shinjiru hosting, they have helped me to migrate my websites from one hosting to another for 4 times in less than 6 months.

I did get promises from Shinjiru's CEO said that after they launched Cloud Computer on 1st July 2011, the situation would be better, but my websites still having problems. They keep breaking promises.

Exabytes will try their best to solve the problem even I used shared hosting, while Shinjiru would ask you to upgrade to Virtual Private Server (VPS) or Dedicated Server. My question is why should I trust Shinjiru for more expensive package of hosting while they are not able to solve the problem for less expensive package?

Support and Experience
Exabytes gives phone from 9am – 5pm, after that I have to use email support. Even though they don't give phone support after 5pm, if my websites have problem, I did get my email reply less than 10 – 15 minutes, even in the midnight. While before 1st July 2011, Shinjiru did give phone support 24/7. They stop giving phone support after 1st July 2011 and promised their customers will improve the email support, but I did't see any improvement in their support because I got my email reply more than 3 hours.

From experience point of view, Exabytes definitely has more experience in solving problem compared to Shinjiru. For the same problem, Exabytes was able to solve the problem for me less than 10 minutes while Shinjiru took more than 7 days but still were not able to solve the same problem for me.

Pricing
From pricing point of view, Shinjiru has the lower price compared to Exabytes. If this is your main reason, you should go for Shinjiru rather than Exabytes. You can visit Shinjiru Website and Exabyes Website to compare the price.

My conclusion is, if you want to choose the right hosting, prevention rather than cure, stability, support (especially social media support, e.g Facebook and Twitter), experience are the most important things you have to consider.

I Hope my experience will help you in choosing the right hosting for your websites.

Web Design in Malaysia - Stop Creating Websites Because of Your Friends and Families

This is one of the biggest mistakes companies can make in designinig websites. This mistake waste your valuable time and money.

Some people in Malaysia build websites not because of their companies' goals and their companies' requirements, but they build websites because of their friends and families. When:

- their friends A tell them that their websites are not beautiful, they build new websites.
- their friends B tell them that their websites are not beautiful, they build new websites.
- their families tell them that their websites are not beautiful, they build another websites.
- their relatives tell them that their websites are not beautiful, they build another websites.

I am wondering, who actually are the owners of their companies? Their friends, their families or their relatives. Don't misunderstand me. If you are one of them, you can listen to their opinions and advices, but eventually you are the ones who make decision.

Since you are the owners of your companies, you should understand what your companies need in designing websites. What your companies' goals, visions, missions, sales targets, etc. YOU SHOULD DESIGN WEBSITES FOR YOUR COMPANIES, not for your friends, families and relatives. If you build websites and make money from them because you know what your companies' goals are, you should be very proud of it. But if you build websites and fail to make money from them because you listen to your friends, families and relatives' advices, no one will care about you. Unless, your friends, families and relatives know what your companies need.

Companies and websites work closely can generate huge income, it should be that way! :)

Design Websites for Your Customers' Customers

Who you should design or develop your websites to? Your customers or your customers' customers??

In order to build websites to sell, you have to design websites for your customers' customers, not your customers. The reason is, it is your customers' customers who buy products or services on your customers' websites.

This is about user experience (UX).

For example, a pet shop owner asked you design a website for him. In order to make his products sell on internet, you have to understand his customers. What keywords they search online, what information they look for before his customers make decision to buy, what the buying process is for his customers, how his customers browse pet shop websites, etc.

If you fail to understand them, you fail to help your customers to build websites that sell.

You have to work with your customers to understand their customers. You have to sit down and discuss what their customers' behaviours, etc.

But sadly, this is not always happen for web designers or web developers in Malaysia with their customers.

Don’t Blame Your Web Designer

Thursday, 21 July 2011 Category Web Development 0 Comments
Don't blame your web designer if your website doesn't generate sales when:

- You don't update your website at all
- You don't do internet marketing at all
- You don't pick up the phone when customers call
- You promised customers A, but you deliver B
- You provide low quality products or services
- You don't develop strong "Why Me" and "Why Now" messages
- You don't EVEN care about your website

As I shared before on our company newsletter, web developing is a team sport. Website doesn't stand alone. It has to work with your marketing department, your top management, your IT department, your customer service department, etc. A single small decision will affect your website in making money.

You have to work with a web designer how to design a good website that is interesting and sell. You need to sit down and talk to the web designer to match your company goals.

If you don't even want to take care about your website or just follow the trend, you better don't build one.

More and more Malaysians now have mobile phone. The percentage of Malaysians to browse your websites using mobile phone keeps increasing. Don't believe it? Let's take a look the statistics from Nielsen Malaysia.

Users of internet on mobile phones, by age
Why Your Websites Should Go Mobile in Malaysia
As you can see the chart above, age 20-24 year olds are more likely to access the internet on their mobile phones. The next two groups are age 25 – 34 and age 15 – 19.

There are still almost half of the respondents (at 48%) in the group of 20-34 years old who have not been using the 3G functions even though they own a 3G phone; cost is the main barrier.

Reasons for not using 3G functions

Why Your Websites Should Go Mobile in Malaysia

As you can see the chart above, for all age group, cost is still the main barrier. Even cost still the main barrier, we believe that mobile phone users to access internet will keep increasing in future.
We build customers' websites not for now but for future so that customers don't have to keep changing their websites.

Top 5 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Have a Website in Malaysia

by Kent Ong

Wednesday, 22 June 2011 Category Web Development 0 Comments
Here are the top 5 reasons why you shouldn't have a website in Malaysia.

1) You Follow Trend
Having a website is not a trend, it is a useful marketing tool to help your company improve its performance. If you have a website because other people have it, you better don't waste money to build one.

2) You Don't Have a Goal

Setting up a goal is a must if you really want to make money by using your website. Without a goal, you don't know where are you heading to.

3) You Don't Have a Plan
If you don't have a plan on how to develop a website, you will fail to make money from your website. Building a website (I am not even talk about internet marketing) is a very professional job. You can get any freelancers to build a website for you with very cheap price, but can the freelancers guarantee you make money from your website? A web developer needs to sit down and communicate with a company to develop a plan to build a website.

4) You Don't Care Your Users' Experience
A great website is for your users or your customers but not for you. It is not you who search your website, it is not you who browse your website and it is not you who buy your products or services on your website. IT IS YOUR USERS OR YOUR CUSTOMERS. Build a website for them, not for you!

5) You Don't Care About Your Website
After building your website, you don't care about your website and you don't update your website regularly. If you wish to make money from your website, you have to update your website regularly for your Search Engine Optimization purpose. Will you read a never updated newspaper? Same goes to your users, they don't want to go to a website that never updated.
